Will it boot with no keyboard?

I have acquired a MacBook Pro A1150, which is missing its keyboard. This seems to mean that I can't turn it on.

Is it actually possible to boot it without the keyboard? It might sound like a silly question, but I intend it to be a server, so USB-input is fine.

Thanks,

Nicholas

Regardless of the keyboard being missing, you should be able to boot the machine. The fact that you can't indicates a trackpad ribbon cable or power button cable issue. First, I would double-check the connection of the trackpad ribbon cable to the logic board.

If this doesn't change anything, you can "jump" the computer using the 2 metal pads to the right of the right fan on the logic board (marked "PWR BTN"). You can carefully use a screwdriver or other small metal object to touch both pads, which will turn on the machine.

Good luck!

Ben, do you think that someone could solder two wires to the MBP power switch then solder the wires other ends to the 2 metal pads marked PWR BTN and use the power switch to boot the machine ?

While I haven't tried it (I must confess I'm a soldering novice), I think that should work (the depression of the switch should complete the circuit between the two). Good call!

Thanks for such quick answers, I'll try the jump start up later today.

It seems as though I didn't quite clarify my situation, as the entire top side of the casing is missing, so no trackpad or keyboard or ribbon cable to my immense irritation.

That shouldn't change the procedure for the PWR BTN procedure though?

Thanks!

I got the beast started, but when I inserted my 10.6 DVD it said: "Mac OS X cannot install on this computer"

A bit of googling later I found this article which got me thinking: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.p...

I ended up taking the HDD out, putting it in a USB-adaptor and installing 10.6 on it by booting up my functional MacBook Pro and pointing the installer to the USB-device.

So now I have a free MacBook Pro albeit lacking touchpad, keyboard and battery... Thanks for the help! (:

Why don't you buy a used complete top case with keyboard off ebay ? Just double check if the socket on the logic board is not damaged. The A1150 machine is still a nice machine, should not end her life as a server.

I would love to, but as it is, I can only afford a power adaptor or an upper case.
