After the OS (Mountain Lion) been a bit dodgy for some time, it went unresponsive and I had to make a hard shut down. When restart again, the system chime comes, the screen lits up, but black and nothing more happens...
I've had issues with the fans going on very high rpm quiet often some months back.
Is it the logic board which has gone melt down?

Try either looking at your display at an angle or shining a flashlight through the Apple logo behind the screen can you see a faint image or your desktop? If you do your problem is the LED display lighting system. If you don't see any image then you have a deeper problem.
