MacBook Pro display gone dead after software update

Hi,

I recently bought a used macbook pro a1226 (Core2duo 2.2, 2 gb ram). It was working perfect. Then I checked for the software update through the about mac menu. It found some updates. I installed the updates and the display gone completely black after I restarted the machine. I have tried everything. I pressed Command+Options+R+P key to refresh. I tried to start the system in safe mode. Nothing worked at all. I am very tensed because I have to work. Please help me to resolve the issue.

Update

Thank you for all your help. I had to bring my Mac back to store and they say when I was loading update it froze uploading and shut everything down.

They fixed it, so back in action. Thanks again...........

It looks like this is a bug in their update. Try running the Apple Hardware Test to make sure it's not a hardware issue (It shouldn't be but it is worth checking to rule out hardware issues). http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

If no hardware problems, try reinstalling the OS or if you have any backups, try reverting back to before the update.

If that doesn't work, take it to the Genius bar and see if they can do anything for you there.

Good luck!

Tim - Apple has a very good track record on its update system. I don't think that was direct cause here. It's more likely the system needed to do a restart to apply the update and Roohul didn't note the amount of time the process needed and stopped the process in mid-stream which could have corrupted things.

Thanks for the help :) I will try to do the hardware test. But Yes ! you are right when system needed to restart I shut down the system instead of restarting it. Then I started the macbook after taking the lunch. I am a windows user actually so I do it often with windows. So not restarting the machine could have caused the problem.

So what can be the best option now ?

Hi I am having the same problem with my MacBook Pro. I checked for the software update through the about mac menu. It found some updates. I installed the updates and the display gone completely black. It will do nothing, I put in a CD to see if it starts and you can hear it spin then stop.

Can anyone advise me what I should be doing? I am not good at Computers so dont understand the jargin. Appreciate any help

Connect to an external display and see if that screen is black also. If it isn't you should be able to proceed. If it is you should purchase an external case for your HD and from another Mac run Utilities-Disk Utilities- DiskFirstAid on it.

John - Did you connect an external display to your system as Machead recommended? Where you able to see your desktop? If not are you able to restart your system using your install/OS-x CD/DVD disks or an external HD that has a working OS on it?

Roohul - Very odd!

I suspect you just had a bad case of luck here. Are you sure the updater wasn't running it has a black screen with some text in the top left corner as its updating. Some updates take some time and need to be installed at the Root level others don't need this deeper level and won't display the black screen on restart.

Try restarting the system again and let it sit for a while (around 10 mins). Assuming you didn't corrupt the process it should restart on its own again one more time and you should see the finder appear.

OK, still nothing, do you have a bootable OS-X CD/DVD or external HD (firewire being best) that you can try to restart from. Are you able to get the system to respond? If so you may need to repair the HD using Disk Utility (or 3rd party tool like Drive Genus). At worst you may need to re-install the OS and your Apps.

If you still can't get any where it sounds like it was just time for the system to die on you (nothing to do with the updates). I would find my way to an Apple Store Genus bar and see what they can do for you.

Good Luck!

Thanks for help:) I have and iso image in my PC for mac osx server 10.6.2. Is it good enough to check for the problem if I burn it on DVD?

por

No - server updates and software are for server OS only. Are you running OS X server?

por

As Machead stated you need to use the correct OS. Did you install the a client version of OS-X on this system or did you install a server version of MAc OS-X. You also need to check the servers Read-Me file, I don't think Snow Leopard OS-X server its supported on this model of MBP which could also explain why you are having problems (if thats what you installed). For now do you have any workstation OS-X CD/DVD install disks (original - Apple logo'ed) or a known working external HD with a bootable version of OS-X on it? Thats what you need here.

Hi

just need to talk about something. I dont have a mac os x 10.6.8 dvd. This is what was originaly installed on my macbook. I have checked for the prices online and it is quite expensive for me. I have heard that the model number I have has known dispaly issue and usually has graphic card problem. IS there a way to find out that issue is related to corrupted files or graphic card has gone bad?

Thanks

Roohul - You more likely have a file corruption issue here. You could try connecting your system to an external monitor but without having a good working OS on CD/DVD or external HD I don't think thats going to tell us much. - Yes, your system does have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT which has a known problem. But, your system symptoms you have told us here don't add-up to be that issue. Did you have some display issues before you tried updating the OS?

Not sure I follow you here: If you setup your MacBook Pro in target mode and then connected it to your iMac via a firewire cable you should see the MBP as if it was an external HD disk on your iMac. That is not the same as using the external video connection on the MBP to an external monitor (like a HD TV). In any case if you can't see your MBP as an external disk and your sure your setup is correct you likely have a very different problem than what this thread is about. You should create your own problem so things don't get clouded with other answers for this threads problem and diagnostics.
