I have an MB Pro 2012 running Catalina and I get the same message.  I think AHT worked under Mavericks then I updated to Mojave then Catalina.   After I upgraded to Catalina is when I discovered AHT didn’t work.  I may wipe the drive and go back to Mavericks unless this can be fixed under Catalina.
