Last week, my iMac started randomly rebooting. The very next day, while using it, it locked up and emanated a loud buzzing noise from the speakers. I had to hold down the power button to turn it off.
Now, it will not boot up at all. Just a black screen with no chime. The fan does come on. Sounds like it responds to missing ram because when I remove the ram, it does beep at me. I also tried all the different key combinations for resetting various things with no response.
From there, I dropped it off to the local Apple store and they required me to leave it there so they could open it up and look at the LEDs. They claim that the '''Logic Board is not communicating with the Display'''. They also stated that '''they cannot determine specifically which component is bad - the logic board or the display'''. They said that the best course of action would be to '''replace the logic board and if that doesn’t fix it to then also replace the display.'''
Does Apple really not have a good troubleshooting method to determine which components are faulty or am I just getting ripped? Throwing parts at $@$* is not troubleshooting.
Given the above information, is there a common issue or a more likely failure that I can explore? I’m not handing Apple another $1100.00 for this computer. For spending over $2000.00 on it, I would have expected it to last me at least 4+ years. o.O
