Why does my camera freeze after using zoom/close up?

My Nikon Coolpix L840 freezes up after using zoom or close up. The on/off light goes out, but the screen stays on. No buttons work. I have to take the batteries out to make the camera work again. I have replaced the batteries with new ones, but it still does the same thing. Any ideas?
