You can install a mac compatible ssd , but i recommend you to install MLC based ssd if you are not on a budget , because is more durable. That is also mac compatible. Very low amount of ssd 's is not compatible with UNIX , but make that when you install the ssd make sure that you have the trim enabled on it. Full explanation here :
