Sounds like 1 or more of the pins on the USB port have for some reason become unconnected to the logic board... if your willing you can try opening and inspecting the port and re soldering the the four pins for the USB (9 for USB 3.0) or try taking it to a computer repair shop (not think geek) if you have never soldered anything before.

If you do open it post some Pictures of the port on the inside
