Had the same problem after replacing a power button, proximity sensor teather cable. I fixed it using a UV filter/foam part that I got on ebay. I paid about $3.50 for ten of them. You need to take the screen off and place one in the square hole that the proximity sensor goues in, then put the phone back together. http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Pcs-Proximity-Sensor-Sticker-Replacement-Part-For-iPhone-4-4GNEW-/280948225811?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4169d1b713 I believe it is best to take the screen off when replacing the power button cable. If you don't remove the LCD screen, the LCD cables are in the way of the power button, and you have to hold them down while replacing the tether, which makes it easy to damage the cables. It's only about ten more screws to take the screen off.
