iPhone 8: Screen flickered now grey with red flecks

I have an iphone 8 and the screen flickered for a few minutes and wouldn't respond to attempts to shut it off. Then the screen went completely grey with red flecks.

I tried the 'forced reset' by pushing and releasing volume up then volume down then holding the side button. I charged it for an hour. I can place a call to the mobile number the phone acts like it's there somewhat - shakes like the ringer is off. I tried to connect it to my computer with itunes and itunes would not recognize the phone (although it has in the past with no problem).

The screen has no cracks. This phone has always lived in a protective case. The phone hasn't gotten wet or anything unusual. There have been no indications of any problems until suddenly this event.

Any ideas?

Attached is a photo.

I just replaced my battery and the new battery hits/crushes the display, causing some discoloring along the cracked part of the display.

The 1st image shows the display is properly attached to the chassis of the phone, while the 2nd image shows the display is removed/unscrewed (P2/Pentalobe Screw) from the chassis.

There's also some discoloration/white streak around the browser's forward button in the 1st photo, but not present if the display is unscrewed from the chassis, shown in the 2nd photo.

Is it because the glass is shattered so I have a clearance issue or is it the battery?

PS: The battery is slightly taller than the Taptic Engine and speaker, and almost as tall as the logic board.

iPhone 8: Epoxy over SMDs on iPhone 8 logic board?

Here's a stitched image of the area just to the north of the battery connector on my mainboard. (The phone's on the bench turned sideways with the charge port to the right. Click on the image to get a better view. Sorry for the poor contrast. Black components, foam and goo on a nearly black board. The only thing that really stands out are the gold contacts.)

My iP8 mainboard developed charge control problems after replacing the charging port assembly. I was running thru the list of causes of charging problems, first looking to see if I had accidentally knocked off one of the SMDs near the battery connector with an errant fingernail.

When I got in there with a microscope I was surprised by what I found. You can see the edge of the battery connector at the bottom of the photo and a mosfet at the top slightly to the right of center. In between that mosfet and the test point at the center of the image, there should be another mosfet package, one that is often knocked loose by accident. But on my board there's this weird black crud covering the area and extending horizontally, covering many other smaller SMDs near the connector as well.

In the image it looks like goo, but in fact it's a very hard substance, like ceramic or epoxy. I assume this was done during manufacturing to prevent accidental damage when connectors are being mated/unmated. Has anyone encountered this before? I haven't seen anyone else mention it on this forum or on other phone repair sites. I'm hoping someone can confirm my guess -- that the second mosfet and other SMDs are there under a layer of epoxy -- or give a alternate explanation. Thanks!

iPhone 8: home button not working but touch id is

here's an odd one. for all the home button issues i've faced (6, 6s, 7 & 8) this is a first.

i have an iphone 8 with a home button that doesn't want to work - it was a real PITA getting from the hello screen to setup and activation without it - but i managed to get to the home apps page. first thing i did was try and set a finger print, which worked fine. just the home button would not respond. i tried the Home Button settings to choose the taptic response level - nothing.

so i turned on assistive touch and that worked as expected.

all of the (OEM) home button issues i've seen have been that the Touch ID stops working, but the home button function is fine (not unlike replacing an OEM button with a JC or YF button).

so this is a first - Touch ID works, home button functionality does not.

any thoughts on how to troubleshoot and hopefully fix it without having to put in a 3rd party button? the IOS is 16.1.1 and i'm afraid that when it sees the non EOM button it's going to do that trick where it turns on assistive touch whether you want it or not (and turns on again after you've turned it off).

Thanks

iPhone 8: New Battery Replacement Not Working

Hello,

I just replaced my iPhone 8 battery using the iFixit repair procedure for the iPhone 8. I have done this procedure once before on this same S/N phone a couple years ago with no issues.

Symptom:

Once the new battery is installed the phone reports a 1% charge level on the battery. When plugging he phone in using an Apple OEM iPad charger (USB-A) and an Apple OEM charge cable (USB-A to lightning) the phone gives me the vibration indicating it’s detected the cable but no charging occurs (no lightning bolt in the battery icon). Reviewing the battery status page in the system settings indicates the phone knows its plugged in but no charging is occurring. Additionally, the phone reboots automagically about once a minute repeatedly. When the phone is on it works normally in all other respects.

Troubleshooting so far:

I have tried multiple hard resets (up volume, down volume, power button) to reset, no change in performance.

I have reviewed the circuit board to see if I disturbed (i.e. broke) any of the MOSFETs or resistors that are commonly called out in other troubleshooting guides around the battery connector area. All SMT components in this area appear to be in good order.

I verified that the battery connector has the foam adhesive backing so there isn’t an additional grounding path through the “back shell” of the connector to the cover plate.

I am not able to download a 3rd party battery app as I can’t keep the phone up long enough to accomplish this.

iPhone 8: Touch stops working sometimes after screen replacement

My iPhone 8 touch might stop working (home button works, the screen is on but not interactable) after I replace a screen myself (aftermarket screen). Reattaching the LCD cables can temporarily solve the issue for a week, but in worst case scenario, only for an hour. Touch simply stops working while normal used, as I never drop my phone after repairing.

Did I do anything wrong when reattaching the LCD cables? Or is it the screen's problem?

iPhone 8: Extracting data from a working iPhone without a functioning screen

Hello, I have an iPhone which has been dropped from which I wish to backup its data. The phone appears to be fully functional (it plays sounds and vibrates at appropriate times) except the screen remains completely blank at all times. I am also unsure whether touch inputs register with the phone, but hopefully poking at a black screen would be the very last resort before attempting to take it apart. I have all associated passwords for the phone. I believe the OS version is 13 or 14, and it has never been "paired" to any computer, nor does it "trust" any USB device. Is there a way to get the data without first fixing the screen?

iPhone 8: Sounds like I am under water in calls

Hi,

I have a iPhone 8. All works fine but when I am making a call the person on other end of call can’t hear a word I am saying unless I am on loudspeaker. I can hear them. But to them it sounds like I am under water. The sound is so poor. I have replaced the bottom mic twice but still the same. I have tried different som cards but all the same. I have turned VoLTE off , still the same.

has anyone else experienced this or got a solution at all please

Dan

Can I remove everything from an iPhone 8 and put the internals on the iPhone SE 2020, as they have identical layouts, and the SE 2020 having a recycled housing? Im asking this because the iPhone 8 is scuffed and I want to give it a brand new look.
