iPhone 7: digitizer only works when touching frame

Hello, I have fixed hundreds of phones and after replacing the first time Screen on and Iphone 7, I noticed the digitizer works great but you have to be holding the phone. If you put the phone down and try to use the digitizer, it will not work.

If I have the phone on a table and touch the metal frame it will work but only touching the glass the digitizer doesn’t respond.

I a guessing it is a ground issue, but was wondering if anyone else has a solution.

iPhone 7: Mic and Receiver not functioning properly - lots of issues

Hi

Device is an iPhone 7 running iOS 11.1.

Things started when calls would all of a sudden start to break up, then whenever I try to make a call or receive one the call screen would freeze up and the other party doesn’t hear anything.

I need to close the call screen like you would close an app, so now I can’t make a call.

I’ve noticed that basically any app or service that uses the mic or receiver isn’t working properly:

Siri – doesn’t respond to voice

Dictating on the keyboard – fails as well

Listening to anything on the receiver doesn’t work – for example a voice message on WhatsApp

Voice Memo app – gets stuck as well.

And so on…..

The speaker works as usual though.

I took it to a lab and he said there’s a notorious issue with the iPhone 7’s audio chip and it’s probably it

What do you think?

iPhone 7: Screen becomes pixelated, goes white, then black

First, let me apologize for the lack of pictures. I don't have the device in my shop anymore.

I had this issue on a customers phone last week and determined it to be a faulty replacement screen, or so I thought. Issue had developed about 1 week after I had replaced the screen on the customers iPhone 7. They stated it would randomly become bright white then black and be unresponsive. Simply pressing the sleep/wake button would return the display to its vivid normality, only to randomly do it again without other symptoms. The customer returned so I could address the issue. The screen had a small crack under the tempered glass protector, but I did not believe it to have anything to do with the issue. (My supplier offers outstanding lifetime warranty and this issue would be covered even with the crack) I proceeded to replace the screen again. Testing before installing showed no issues, so i finished the repair and contacted the customer on her alternate number. While on the phone she asked for a number from her contacts. I proceeded to open the phone app and..... screen developed a criss-crossed (think fine vertical and horizontal lines resembling mesh) pattern followed by images dying away and the screen going white(imagine you could command screen brightness beyond factory limits to the point of overexposing everything), followed by the screen going completely black. Pressing the sleep/ wake button immediately restored screen function. I contacted my supplier and after eliminating any possible causes, we concurred it had to be faulty screens(bad batch possibly?). They cross shipped me new screens and the customer decided to continue to use the phone while we waited. To be absolutely sure I didn't end up with the same issue, I ordered several premium screens from another supplier as well. After installing screens from both suppliers, the issue remains. I did notice, however, that the issue occured only when I opened an app. And it is random. Sometimes the same app, sometimes another, but only when the app first opens and the screen image changes. The phone has been factory reset both from the phone and through iTunes, but the issue remains. The customer has been awesome through the whole ordeal, and even when there was no resolution, she was thankful I'd tried. She plans to try a warranty through Verizon, but I'm not optimistic. Our Verizon store has a bad reputation when it comes to customer service.

I've scoured the net for info on this, but to no avail. Hoping someone here has had experience with the issue or heard of it. In the end, I'm not happy at all with how this ended. I'll replace the phone if she's unable to get help from verizon, and we all know Apple won't lift a finger since it was repaired 3rd party. Like many other repairers out there, my main frustration is that I don't know what caused it. Thanks in advance!

Jake

iPhone 7: Both camera, flash and earpice not working, but sensors are working.

Hi iFixit community,

I have a problem with my iPhone 7. It's not the first time i repaired this device, so it's not like i have 0 knowledge about repairing it.

Yesterday when I was replacing the screen and battery, after turning on the phone I encountered something wired - both front and back camera are not working, flash is not working and the earpiece speaker doesn't work. Yet the auto-brightness feature works just fine, and that makes me think that it's not caused by broken flex cable. Upon disconnecting the front sensor flex, the back camera and flash is still not working. Tried also disconeccting the back camera, no luck there aswell. Replaced battery, did nothing.

Can anyone help to think what can be causing that? Maybe it's the flex cable afterall? Or maybe replacing the back camera will fix it? I don't want to risk buying parts that won't help with the repair, and will just waste my money.

iPhone 7: iPhone 7 battery replacement gone wrong

Hi folks,

I replaced the battery on an old iPhone 7 my sister used as her daily with one from iFixit and after reassembling everything and turning the phone on, it began boot-looping. Disconnecting the home button flex cured the boot issues but the phone now overheats and a full battery drains in a matter of minutes (seems like an audio IC failure).

I've repaired a fair bit of iPhones (older and newer) and this is the first time it goes so wrong. I have no idea why the home button or its flex cable failed and why the phone seems to be displaying logic board issues too. It was working perfectly fine before I opened it.

Carefully removing the screen is the first thing I always do and I take great care when disconnecting/connecting all flex cables. I've read that iPhone 7s had notoriously fragile internals. Is it true?

What could I've possibly done wrong to mess up this repair so badly? Just want to learn from whatever mistakes I've made or if I just had bad luck with an old and fragile phone.

iPhone 7: Phone glitches when booting (images and video)

I have my old iPhone 7. It is not needing repair because I am using a Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G, but I would still like to know what is wrong with it and possibly recover my photos. The low battery/needs to be charged indicators show up and do not glitch, and the phone boots properly until the loading bar is about 10% done. At that point, the apple logo becomes "glitched" or corrupted and the bar does not go any further. It stays like this until you hold the side button and volume down button at the same time or until it runs out of battery power. My speculation is that when it is booting, it works fine until it runs into some corruption on the internal storage.

I have dropped this phone on many occasions (although it was in a protective Tech21 case). It has also gone into a repair mode two times before this problem spontaneously occurred. The phone has been sitting on a shelf for about a year. This problem occurred in early 2020. I have gotten the phone to display "connect to itunes", and I have attempted to repair the storage corruption from a computer, but it did not work.
