Xbox 360: Something Wrong With My Xbox?

My Xbox 360 (bought it a few yeas ago), will not read games as games. It plays DVDs and I don't know about CDs (haven't tried it). It Connects to the WiFi. But when I put an Xbox 360 game in the console it says 'Play DVD'. I press play and all that comes up is either an Xbox 360 screen, and I have to press the home button and go back to dash board. Or It says, "To play this game, You must put it in an Xbox 360 console." In every language. So I take the disc out and clean it and restart the Xbox, then try it again, same thing happened. Half an hour later the Xbox reads it as a game and I press play. The screen goes black for a few seconds and then a screen pops up and says 'This disc is unreadable' (etc). So I take it out and clean it and it either does the Xbox 360 screen thing or it says the disc is unreadable. What is wrong with my Xbox and how do I fix it? (and if I need to go somewhere to fix it, Where and How Much will it cost?).

Thank you so much for your help ^-^

Xbox 360: Is it ok to test for power on motherboard without heatsinks installed?

Hi all,

I'm working on an xbox 360 that I got off ebay listed as having "no power". I checked the usb ports, there is one damaged port, I straightened the pins. I cleaned the motherboard and fins of both heatsinks and the fans. I also did the reflow of the chips, just in case. I just want to know if it's ok to plug up the board while it's in it's metal frame without going to the trouble of applying thermal paste and heatsinks, just for like 1-3 seconds to test for power.

Thanks guys, keep up the awesome work! I love this site.

Ok, so I went ahead and did it anyway because I really want to get this thing put back together. I fixed the power issue. Now to get it back together and see if it works or red rings on me....

Xbox 360: Graphical Glitches and Tears during gameplay (Xbox 360 E-74 error)

This is a really weird problem, so here it goes. I recently got my Xbox 360 fixed for an E-74 error which usually means a GPU problem or HANA chip problem (as best to my knowledge) by someone the does repairs professionally. I got it back and a few weeks later the E-74 came back, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and fixed it myself. I took apart the system, cleaned up the thermal paste, and took a heat gun to my system after warming it as some guides have recommended for the "do it yourself" fixes (it was really wonky) and it seemed to work, but for only a day. This is of course after I reapplied thermal paste and put it all back together.

Here's where it gets really weird; I still get the E-74 error, but only after I play a game. I'll be playing a game and maybe ten to fifteen minutes into the game I'll get pixelated graphical problems (black and white pixel boxes appearing, followed by purple ones, then multicolored lines across the tv, etc.), but the game will never, ever freeze. I can play indefinitely, but the moment I turn my Xbox 360 off and try to turn it back on then *poof* E-74 error. When I unplug the AV cable and power and let it sit for thirty minutes to an hour, sometimes longer, then plug everything back in and start it up then, like magic, I can play the system and play a game! But the process will repeat itself; ten to fifteen minutes later I get graphical errors that vary in severity, I can play whatever game is in the drive for however long I want, but the moment I turn it off and turn it back on I get the E-74 error. Unplug, let sit, rinse and repeat.

My Xbox 360 is the falcon board, but I'm using the Core series power brick and AV cable, a 120 GB HDD that I bought from gamestop a few years back, and a wired Xbox 360 controller. My 360, as I said before, has been repaired before, I put Arctic Thermal 5 where the GPU and CPU go, and every screw is accounted for. Does anyone have any answers as to why this may be happening?

Xbox 360: Red Ring Of Death Thermal Paste Not Working

Okay, I bought an xbox 360 off ebay with the red ring of death. It is the three light one. I have thermal paste and I re applyed the paste. There are no x-clamps, as someone already tried this. I put longer screws in and drilled bigger holes in the metal box that the mother board sits in and the screws are driven through the metal box, through the motherboard, and into the heatsinks. I then tried to plug it in without the fan to let the paste cook. When it turns on, the green light is solid, and the three red lights blink. It doesnt act like it runs completely, therefore it doesnt heat up. So the paste isnt cooking to the heatsink. Why wont in heat up? Please help!
