Mac Mini Model A1176: "USB device drawing too much power" error on startup with no devices

"USB device drawing too much power" error on startup with no devices connected.

dear all, I've been doing some upgrades to a Mac Mini Model A1176. During the process I accidentally cooked the sound card but have replaced it and have sound working again. However I believe this accident has damaged something else on the Mini as I now get the above error every time on startup. This is irrespective of whichever OS i have installed; i.e. Snow Leopard, Lion etc. It also happens when no USB devices are plugged in. So I've got a feeling there's something wrong with the USB Bus, possibly due to the previous accident. I'm in the process of replacing the Interconnect board & hope this might fix things.

Has anyone had this problem and found a resolve or correctly diagnosed the cause?

best regards, SCH

Mac mini Model A1176: looking for a part, ZIF Cable lock

I could not get my MacBook Pro to start back up, I was due for a new one so I got a new MacBook Pro. I took the drive out of the old one and put in a Mini that I have so that I could copy off the user account and other data. When taking the Mini apart the ZIF cable lock that holds the audio cable to the board at the back of the dvd drive broke. I am looking to either get another ZIF cable lock to hold the cable in or another board with the ZIF cable lock attached. This was my first mini that I took apart and I wasn't gentle enough with this connector. IFIXIT do you sell this part?

Regards,

Mac Mini Model A1176: Any idea what killed my Mac Mini?

I got this Mac Mini (1.5GHz Intel Core Solo/512MB SDRAM/60GB HD/Combo drive/Intel GMA950 GPU/AirPort & Bluetooth) secondhand around seven years ago. After a while, it became very slow and I needed to get a whole new computer, but it still worked (and was stored in its box for a good four years).

I plugged it in today, and tried to reinstall 10.4.7 from the disc it came with - to no success. I wiped the HDD, ejected, unplugged, diagnosed, restarted everything. I always got the "Alert - this software cannot be installed on this computer" dialog after the language selection prompt.

After finally being able to get the installer disc out, I tried to put linux mint on it - and that was when everything went wrong. Now it won't turn on, at all, no response to the power button, no startup sound, no noise from the optical reader, no anything.

(I wonder if getting the linux disc out would change something, but every article and tutorial on getting stuck discs out assumes that the device can boot up which mine can't.) I might have messed up with the way the disc is burned and such, even though I tried to follow instructions and methods online.

Was it the linux disc that fried something? Was it too much for such an old computer to be rebooted every five minutes and that killed it? Is it worth to pay for it to get fixed (if it can be fixed, that is...)

Mac Mini Model A1176: Mac mini A1176 boots once, then not again, after EFI boot changes

Short Form

After installing Ubuntu on my 2006 Mac mini, and following the procedure to get it to EFI boot straight to the GRUB bootloader, my Mac mini will no longer reliably boot up. If I open the machine up and disconnect all connectors and boards, and then reconnect them, it will boot up fine the first time and operate completely normally, but the next time I restart, it comes back up with no startup chime, black screen, and no power to my USB keyboard or mouse. It doesn't respond to any startup key sequences (cmd-opt-p-r, 'c', etc). Any ideas what might be causing this?

Long Form

I'll start by saying that I don't have high hopes of getting this fixed after all the shenanigans I've been pulling on this machine recently. But you all love a challenge, don't you? So, here we go.

First, some history. I have a 2006 Intel Mac Mini (MacMini1,1). It was originally a 1.83 GHz Core Duo, and I upgraded it to a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor in January 2013 (following the iFixit guide, of course). At that time I also flashed its firmware to the MacMini2,1 firmware, the thinking being I'd want to increase the RAM to 3GB at some point (which I haven't done). I used the guide here: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,... -- but for whatever reason I never did the steps to upgrade to Lion.

It's been working smoothly since then, but in the past month or so I started getting the urge to install Ubuntu Linux on it, since Apple has long since stopped supporting this model and Mac OS X 10.6.8 was getting long in the tooth. I used this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t... and was able to successfully manually boot the Mac into Ubuntu. I was also able to get it to boot using rEFInd. I should probably have left well enough alone, but I felt the need to get it to boot directly into the GRUB boot loader. So I followed the more detailed steps here: http://heeris.id.au/2014/ubuntu-plus-mac... , and that's where my boot-up trouble started, as described in the short form opening paragraph.

I have since been able to pull the drive out of the Mini and put it in a USB enclosure. When I hook the enclosure up to a MacBook, I'm able to examine all the files on the disk and everything seems normal. I took the steps to remove the Ubuntu partitions from the disk, and also removed the ubuntu files from the EFI system partition, just in case those were causing problems. At that point I was able to boot the MacBook into Mac OS X 10.6.8 from this drive, and everything appears as it did previously on the Mini. I put the drive back in the Mac mini and attempted to boot, and the first time I booted, it booted up fine. The system operated normally. Oddly, the system actually booted itself up as soon as I plugged in the power cord. However, after I tried to reboot (I selected the 10.6.8 disk in the startup disk control panel and rebooted), on each ensuing reboot I get the following symptoms:

1. Power led turns on, and you can hear the optical drive checking itself.

2. Startup chime does not sound.

3. Monitor remains black - screen status flickers between analog/digital.

4. USB mouse light flickers on briefly, then power.

5. Mini does not respond to any keyboard commands on startup (tried C to boot from a CD, cmd-opt-P-R to reset PRAM, cmd-S and cmd-V for single-user and verbose modes).

I'm puzzled as to why it will boot up the first time after disassembly/reassembly, but not after restarts/shutdowns. It almost seems like the disassembly causes some setting to be cleared, allowing it to initially boot, but when it restarts, some new or remembered setting takes over and doesn't allow it to boot again.

I have also tried booting from the Firmware Restoration CD 1.7, thinking that perhaps the firmware has been corrupted, but the Mini just keeps the CD in the drive and doesn't to any booting or firmware restoration. I'm guessing it's because I had upgraded the firmware to MacMini2,1, and the firmware restoration CD only has MacMini1,1.

So...... any ideas?

Mac Mini Model A1176: Mac Mini Black screen after apple logo, cursor working

Hello everyone I have a Mac mini 2.1 A1176 Mid 2007

Versión 2.0 2x512

Intel core 2 Dúo 2ghz

RAM 1gb DDR 2 667 X2

Video: Intel GMA 950

And every time it boots after the apple logo it stays black but the cursor its working. and thats all, it boots on safe mode (Shift key pressed) but only that. from the rest I installed Lion, Snow leopard, etc only in safe mode but nothing else fix it.

Did a SMC reset (the power button pressed) and all the reset modes on the internet and nothing works, even the Restore CDs didn't do anything

I don't know if the previous owner upgrade the Rom and SMC, I believe the original version is 2.0 but the System Report says it is Mac Mini 2.1. the rom and SMC installed its the next one

Rom: MM21.009A.B00

SMC: 1.19f2

I believe theres another SMC for this version of the mini, But can't change/upgrade it.

Any suggestions??
