MacBook Pro 14" 2021: Why does my MacBook hard crash after opening lid?

I have a M1 Macbook Pro 14" (2021) that I have been using for 4 years. For a long time, I simply used the OS it came out of the box with (macOS 12.1). It never gave any issues and I was too lazy to update it. One day I simply opened the lid of my macbook and tried to use Touch ID to open lock screen. After several attempts of trying to use Touch ID (it has a tendency to not work first time), I realized my mac froze and then a hard crash occurred (apple logo flashed).

I tried to force restart which led me to the black screen with exclamation mark. There was no trackpad haptic, power button was unresponsive, MagSafe LED did not work. Since I didn't have a secondary mac for a DFU restore, I simply kept my mac in isolation for a while and didn't touch it. 2 days later I plugged my mac in using Magsafe and the LED lit up.

After a full charge, I opened my macbook which showed how it restarted due to a problem. The logs said it was a kernel panic. After digging, i decided to update my OS to the latest version (macOS Tahoe 26.5.2). I thought it would fix every problem. However a few days later, the same thing happened. I opened the lid, spammed Touch ID for it to register, and then it simply hard crashed and I had to wait another 2 days for it to boot up again (same symptoms). This time there was no kernel log reports and my mac thinks absolutely nothing went wrong (I checked console and there was no crash logs or anything)

What is wrong with my macbook? Is it a Touch ID issue or some other hardware/ software related problem?

Things to keep in mind:

1. I installed battery toolkit and used it in this month. I never had any issues with battery but decided to use it since my capacity was 85%. Cycle count is at 483. Condition is normal

2. I did not perform a full wipe when updating my OS from 12.1 to 26.5.2

3. After my macbook booted up, there were no other problems and it worked as intended.

4. Apple diagnostics says there is nothing wrong with any of my hardware (including Touch ID and Battery)

Update 1: Did a workaround by disabling lock screen entirely and removing touch ID as they were usually the causes of hard crash. After leaving my mac overnight with lid closed (not shutdown), it was simply dead right off the bat. I digged up some logs using the same command as before:

Somehow, my battery went from 75% in sleep state, hard crashed into a dead mode, and then suddenly became 69%

Update 2: Decided to shutdown mac and hopefully boot into diagnostics mode. Turns out mac simply restarted before i could even do anything and it said my mac restarted due to a problem. Logs are below:

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: Will swapping the battery show a 'service required' message?

Im planning on swapping the original battery on my 14" MacBook Pro as it's performance has degraded over the years, but I don't know if performing this will show the 'service required' message even after replacing it, similarly as is does when swapping out a display.

Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro 14-inch 2021 (A2442, M1 Pro) and I want to improve cooling with the easiest/safest method possible.

I don’t want to do a full logic board removal right now if I can avoid it. I’m planning the “add thermal pads” mod — placing high-conductivity thermal pads on top of the metal heatsink/radiator so heat transfers better to the aluminum bottom case (turning the whole bottom into an extra passive heatsink).

I’ve watched some of Your videos and others but there is not a video for my question (what i want).

My questions:

1. For the easier bottom-case-only version, is 1.5mm or 2mm thick high W/mK pads (Thermalright / Gelid / Arctic style) the best choice? What size sheet should I get and where exactly on the heatsink should I place the pieces?

2. I will leave Apple’s original grey paste on the main SoC and the black thermal gel (TCRS Carbon Black) on the RAM chips completely alone. I dont wanna touch them i want to add more too cool it down.

4. What kind of real-world gains have people seen on the 14” M1 Pro specifically (temps, fan noise, sustained performance)?

5. If the pad mod isn’t enough later, is the full heat sink replacement guide the right next step, and do you recommend Noctua NT-H2 or Arctic MX-6?

I will make pictures when i do this and share it with you here so people to know excactly what to do.

The microphone on my M1 Macbook Pro is very muffled.

After some investigation, I'm fairly sure the problem is a blocked grille. But it's hard to identify which (if any) of the hundreds of dimples on the left-hand side are actual holes and therefore need cleaning. Is there any information on this?

Hi everyone,

I am noticing an issue with the display on my 14-inch MacBook Pro (Model A2442). There is a subtle but noticeable color shift happening across the screen. When viewing a pure white background, the affected areas look off-white/grayish. On dark backgrounds, there are permanent "smudge" marks that do not wipe away with a microfiber cloth.

It looks like the anti-reflective coating is failing or peeling (Staingate)?

Has anyone successfully stripped the coating on this specific 14-inch model without damaging the Mini-LED backlight or glass?

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

]Not sure if this has been reported on or if I just have a weird bug but for the life of me I cannot get the battery charge limiter to work. I thought it would be nice since I rarely use it for more than a few hours at a time and figured it could save me the hassle of replacing the battery again, or at least offset it. Admittedly I do not know if it is due to the battery being aftermarket or if it is just modern macOS doing modern macOS things, so I am just seeing if anyone has similar issues.Edit:

Im lost. Is the problem the macbook or my headphones? The headphones and desktop speakers are the only aux device i have that i can try. And on desktop speakers i cant hear any crakling or loosing audio when plugged into macbook. On the headphones there is obvious audio drops. I tested the headphones on my old elitebook and they dont drop audio like this. I have a 30 day return window on this macbook so i would really want to know if this is normal or should i return it? it works normally when i dont move it, but if i move it it does this audio crackling

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: New ifixit battery won't charge

I've just installed a new ifixit battery (from the "MacBook Pro 14" (A2442, A2779, A2918) Battery" ******kit). My macbook recognises it as a new battery because the health is 100%, compared to my last battery which was around 70%. After I first installed the battery and plugged it in, it immediately said it was at 62% battery and would not charge at all. I left it charging for two hours and shut it down for long periods of time, but nothing has worked so far.

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: Runaway cursor and click after battery replacement

I replaced the battery on a 2021 MacbookPro. Now, I have functionality, but the cursor/trackpad will suddenly runaway, and/or click in rapid fashion. I have to use a key to stop it. I will recheck cables and connection tapes, but if anyone else has any ideas please let me know.

i find guides on youtube guys telling to stick the old bracket to new LCD with tesa tape model 66822, but i can't buy it in my country, can i just use 3M tissue tape?

or it will risk cracking the LCD glass on assembly process cause by pressure or movement while fitting it into bezel?

any tape suggested to use around the bezel surrounding LCD also? i see it was so thin

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: "Service Recommended" after new battery install

I replaced my battery in my 2021 14" Macbook Pro. Fairly simple with no issues..Now it shows the cycle count reset to 3 which is correct, the power remaining which is also correct but it still states "Service Recommended".
Is there another reset I need to do?

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: Trackpad rubbing screen after battery replacement

I recently did a battery replacement on my 2021 14" MacBook Pro. Part of that procedure involves removing the trackpad, which I did. I thought I had secured it correctly, but it seems that the trackpad may have been sitting a little too high up, and it has rubbed against the screen, which makes it appear there is a constant smudge. I've obviously tried cleaning it off, to no avail.

Last night I took the trackpad out again and did my best to reseat it correctly.

I'm still not sure if it's correct--compared to my work laptop (a 2024 MacBook Air) the trackpad is clearly indented a fraction of a millimeter -- you can feel it with your fingers when you swipe off the trackpad. On my MacBook Pro, some edges of the trackpad feel like they are underneath the chassis, while others (especially the bottom right corner of the trackpad) feel perfectly flat with the chassis.

Some questions:

1. What is normal for a 2021 MacBook Pro? Should the trackpad be slightly indented below the chassis? (P.S. this is why the repair manual needs more than just "do it in reverse")
2. As I have things now, is it likely that the trackpad is still rubbing on the screen? I'm probably going to want to replace the screen now, and I don't want to spend $500 and then ruin the new screen because the trackpad still isn't right.
3. If the trackpad is wrong, how can I get it lower? I've already tried reseating it, and it does not seem to want to go any lower in the chassis. Am I missing something?

I had a problem with my MacBook pro 2021. M1 chip and was only using it about a year when I was having problems where it wouldn't charge.

So I sent it to some guy on YouTube or company on YouTube in Virginia. They charged me $200 to tell me that I need to have parts replaced on the circuit board that will cost me over $1,000 or $600. And then I found the guy on eBay and he's been working on my laptop and said that there were about four capacitors that shorted out.

So I think that your problem's probably related to bad capacitors. It could be shorting out the rest of the board so it's best not to have it plugged up at all. And if you're looking to have somebody fix it, you probably will have to pay about $300 to $400 if you go with somebody off of eBay

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: MacBook Pro 14-inch M1 Not Charging via MagSafe or USB-C

My MacBook Pro 14-inch M1 refuses to charge, whether I use MagSafe or USB-C. It only charges very slowly when the MacBook is powered off. When it's on, the LED stays orange (without blinking), but there’s no charging happening.

I also found that one of the USB-C ports on the left side isn’t functioning at all—it doesn’t detect USB drives, while the other USB-C port works fine (though still no charging).

I followed tutorials and opened the MacBook, but everything looks intact. All the ports appear undamaged, and there’s no visible wear or issue.

This problem started suddenly, with no prior warning or incidents. I’ve been using the official Apple charger and cable.

As part of troubleshooting, I tried downgrading macOS using another Mac, but that didn’t help. I've also tried replacing the faulty usb-c and MagSafe connectors with ones from a working MacBook Pro, but the issue persists. I’m starting to suspect that the logic board is the problem, even though I haven’t done anything to damage the Mac.

At the moment, the battery is at 100%, and the MagSafe LED is green, but the Mac still isn’t recognizing the Apple Power Adapter (see attached photo).

Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed?

MacBook Pro 14" 2021: Magsafe 3 blinking orange slowly and Mac not turning on

My MacBook Pro M1 Pro (A2442) recently stopped turning on. Whenever I try to charge it the Magsafe 3 led blinks slowly in orange and even if I leave it for 30+ min it doesn't turn on. I have tried with USB c charging as well and it doesn't turn on.

I haven't used this Mac much so I usually only turn it on every month and the battery is dead so I have to charge it for 10 min or more before it can turn on on 1% battery and I can use it. I also usually don't turn it off and I guess it turns itself off by running out of battery.

Do I need to change the battery or how can I what's wrong with it ?
