There looks like a resistor or capacitor that burned and failed when I open the charger up. Can you repair this?

DeWalt DCD771C2: DeWalt lithium ion 18v issues

Hoping someone can help me out here I have 4 x 18v li ion batteries 2 of which are 5 months old & 2 which are 8 months old. When at work the other day one of the batteries ran out so I put it on charge to discover my other 3 were also flat, after charging all 4 batteries until the charge complete light came ON I went to use them to find that they all went flat after about 5 seconds of pressing the trigger on the drill so I then tried these batteries in other cordless tools such as my impact driver with no luck.

I tested each battery with a multimeter and each battery had between 10-11 volts.

I find it hard to believe all 4 batteries would die on the same day so I stuck my multimeter in the charger and although the 'charging' light would not flash the charger was out putting pulses of between .5 - 3.5v DC, is this normal?

Does anyone know a method of pinpointing the problem? Eg battery cell test or charger test?

I used my drill today and I went to drill a into a piece of brick and the bit went back into the drill somehow. I can open and close the chuck but the drill bit will not come out. When I push on the end of the chuck it goes into the drill, it has a lot of movement.

I tried everything to try and get the drill bit out, nothing works, I don't understand how it could get stuck in the drill when I can still open and close the teeth to the chuck. Thanks.

DeWalt DC970: What's the biggest 20V pack that can be SAFELY run?

I have a DeWalt DC970 from years ago and no batteries as they are dead. That said, I have primarily moved to 20V tools but this drill still works just fine; I just cannot buy the original batteries as they were discontinued being NiCd 18V. The batteries have long since been scrapped and were discontinued in 2021. I have XR and Atomic 20V tools as well as one standard non XR saw I keep as a backup to the XR saw. I once had two packs and the drill was shipped with 1.2Ah batteries but I know DEWALT sold 4Ah NiCds at one point too.

Despite having the higher end tools, I still want to keep this one around for jobs I do not want to run my good XR drill on. I have the DCA1820 and 4x 5Ah packs (18650-based) and 2 PowerStacks (5Ah/1.7Ah), so I am wondering what the sweet spot for the older 18V tools is. I did look into a brushless 20V entry level drill on sale for the batteries, but I looked into that years ago before I got 6 20V batteries. I don't think that plan makes as much sense now unless I get some insane deal on a 20V Brushless with 2 2Ah batteries.

DeWalt DC970: Are the knockoff NiMh batteries any good?

One of my two DC970 batteries are at the end of it's life (6.9V/~1.01 A) from the original 18V/1.2Ah. My other battery isn’t much better (11.35V/~1.05A), so it’s time to get new batteries. The batteries are bad enough I went to use it and it was struggling with removing a screw.

I am looking at either the DCA2203C 20V kit (~$100) or buying a set of knockoff NiMh batteries (much cheaper) since both of them are pretty much shot. My charger can handle it since I have the 116 and not the 115. My concern is how long will they last compared to the NiCd packs becuase there are almost no vendors making clone NiCd batteries - not that you’d want them.

Has anyone worked with these knockoff batteries and are they worth the money? The high cost of the lithium kit makes it harder to justify piecemeal, but what does make sense is a new drill (~$100) and a DCA1820 ($35) - which will keep the DC970 in service with good batteries. The cheapest set I found that’s 3600mAh for $28 ($14/battery).
